The Jason/Willamette Collision

The following 10 photos are courtesy of David Vetter, MR3. They depict the damage done to the Jason when the fleet oiler, the USS Willamette AO-180, struck the Jason in February of 1986 during a nighttime unrep simulation 60 miles SW of Pearl Harbor. There were many fires and extensive damage was done to the Jason as the photos show. Sadly, one of our Jason sailors, CPO Susano Valdez, was killed as a result of the collision. My sincere thanks and gratitude to David for providing these photos to share with his fellow Jason sailors.

Some more photos of the Willamette collision aftermath. These fine photos are courtesy of Deborah Burr Atkins, HT3. Deb served on the "J" from November of 1985 to October of 1987. Many thanks to you, Deb, for sharing these Jason memories with your fellow Jason sailors. It's very much appreciated.

A view of some of the collision damage. A mass of twisted and mangled metal.
Another view of the aftermath. The USS Brunswick ATS-3, a salvage and rescue ship, as seen through the hole in the side.

Here are a few more excellent photos of the aftermath of the Jason/Willamette collision. They were generously provided by Chris Coghlan HTC (RET). Chris was a happy crew member from 1985 to 1987. He was the LPO of the Maintenance Shop.

Chris, thanks a whole lot for sharing these great photos with me and with all of our fellow Jason sailors. Your kindness and generosity is greatly appreciated.
