Just checking out the new stuff since my last visit. Was onboard the Jolly "J" from Sept. 1986 until Jan. 1992. Was the LPO, then Shop Supervisor of the Pipe Shop. Made HTC in 1990, and moved to the Planning Office. Also was member of the Argonauts, and then Jason's softball team when they combined. Won the San Diego Naval Station Championship one year even! Have alot of great memories of the ship, and of some of the guys and gals that I served with. Keep up the great job Nick, you're the one that helps to keep those memories going! I've gotten a new e-mail address since my last visit, so any old shipmates that want to contact me can e-mail me there. All take care, and have a great Jolly "J" day! Mike |

They are 18 (Kyra and getting ready to join the National Guard), 13 (Lissa) and 10 (Colin). As they get older, they understand and appreciate more and its just narccisistic of me (as I'm getting older too), but I like showing off and letting them get a glimpse of mom as more than just mom. I've dug out some more pic's of the J and some crew shots and will scan them and get them off to you soon. I've heard from a few people over the years via military.com and I sure appreciate this site as it's a great link to keeping in touch. TTFN, Deb |

I have not heard from them as of yet. Too bad she couldn't be saved. If someone can supply some thinner oil than the #6 Black Oil that we used and a gas powered generator to get the electric fuel oil pump going in the after fireroom we would be able to make steam. About 20 "Snipes" would be needed and about 6 men to man the bridge. (They need a bit of sleep now and then.) We could then sneak her out from where she is now and find a port with some good liberty.. Those were the days.... |

If any Jason sailor wants to read the press release announcing the news, go to http://www.marad.dot.gov/ and click on "Headlines: Five more ships to leave MARAD Reserve Fleet Sites". The news saddens me but I guess that it was inevitable that she was going to have to go to the scrap heap sooner or later. She will soon be gone but not forgotten. At least not as long as I have my website. |

I've always wanted to find some photos of the Jason after the collision with the Willamette so that my wife and others could better appreciate this moment in history that I was a part of. I was onboard from 1984 to 1990 first as a non-designated hole snipe but later on as an MR working in the machine shop. This site brings back a lot of memories. I have 2 regrets with my time here. Not owning a camera and not ordering all the Westpac cruise books I had a chance to (I think I only have a couple). I must say looking at the Jason in mothballs does bring about feelings of melancholy. I agree with the others here that it would be nice to be able to walk her decks again. |

For an additional $25 a picture can be added. The picture if taken during the time of service aboard the ship would be of tremendous aid in bringing back the memories. As an example you can log on and check my entry. I served aboard the USS Falgout from May 55 to May 58 as a Radarman Thanks Charles Cain |

I also joined the Navy 4 years out of high school. Took my basic at Bainbridge Maryland, then stationed at Pensicola Florida and then to Albany Georgia. As you know at that point in time women were not "allowed" to serve on ships, boy has the navy changed there. I was in for 3 years, came out 3rd class petty officer. I was a yeoman so I did the paper work for a while of the enlisted and officers. Had a top secret clearance so dealt alot with classified material. In Pensacola was stationed with a flight training squadron, our squadron flew UC 45J and F 4. There I rapidly moved up to be the personal secretary of the CO and Xo, a job a really hated, NOT. Both of them had to get flight time in so if they went up and I was not busy I got to go with, I love to fly. Met my husband of 36 years there, he actually was my cousins roommate who was stationed there. My husband served on the USS Ranger and did the West Pac tour also, he talked of the same things you did, I had to chuckle about boot camp, I can relate. Garbage can watch at 2 a.m. over a secured garbage can was crazy. Everyone was sleeping - who the heck would use it them???!!! Scrubbing imaginary black marks off the drill hall floor with a tooth brush was even dumber!! Just wanted to let you know this is an awesome site, was fun to view. I have given the address of the day twice in our town on Memorial day and also for about 5 years have given a tribute speech for Veterans day. I am also very proud that I served my country. I went in when guys were burning their draft cards as it was the time of Viet Nam, I decided I was proud enough of my country I would serve some time for it and I did. Both my husband and I were going to make it a life career, however the day before he left for Nam I found out I was expecting and then it was an automatic discharge, I got 2 months early. Our daughter was 2 1/2 months old before he ever saw her. When he got back he found out if he re-enlisted he would have to do another Nam tour and he told them to forget it. He wanted to watch his daughter grow up and be able to do things with her so that was the end of his career. Now that I have written a book I will close. Nice making contact with you. |

Surprised no mention on the site unless I missed it. First commanded Falgout early 1960's. Understand he was a fine USN officer. Any comments from those who served under him then? Met him down here when he was skipper of USS Taussig in 1966. Also in San Diego in October 1967. Late actor Rod Steiger also served earlier as a torpedoman on her in WWII. If any Falgouter remembered seeing our ship HMAS Duchess off Ca Mau in early April 1967 I would be pleased to know. We had a great reunion last month and we plan to meet again in Perth in 2006. Perhaps a good chance for any Jasons and other Falgouts now living in Perth, WA to join the Dukes of Duchess as we celebrate her ladyship. Happy Thanksgiving. Those turkeys will also serve us in their supreme sacrifice, for us at Christams later down under. Best. |
