These poems were written by Jennifer Brant, a sailor on the Jason when the ship was on the way to participate in Desert Storm. She was inspired to write them by the beauty of the ocean while underway. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Sunset at Sea

As sunlight fades
a single ship
is sillouetted against the night
do not feel sad
but happiness and joy
for the morn will come
and so too the sun
bringing it's peace with the light

Homeward Bound

The whistle blew
under-way was shouted
finally we knew
we're on our way home
With the war over
and cleanup begun
we did all we could
we knew we had won
as I reflect back
upon our first day here
I remember wondering
when will I leave
I know now
I've lived through an experience
I'll not soon forget

Lone Sailor Man

Lightning flashes across the sky
as a sailor stands alone
there is no fear within his heart
for he knows he's headed home
This is the story of the Lone Sailor Man
who left family and friends
for beautiful distant lands
each port brings something new
as he sails along the ocean blue
the war and fighting are thoughts left far behind
the storm and the lightning
reflect the pain and tears in his eyes
but as land draws near again
the only thing he sees at night
are faraway lands with brilliant lights
along with pierside comes duty and work
but when "Liberty" is called, he has time to resort
back to the thoughts of a lone sailor man
who left family and friends
for beautiful distant lands

Solace at Sea

I sat upon the porch one day
and thought about the ocean so far away
I wondered what's on the other side
is it forever in this town that I must hide
Now in the Navy I am bound
my feet on the water, not solid ground
I sit and watch the endless waves
and countless stars in moonlit skys
That's where I find my refuge
now this is where I hide
Someday I will return to that small town
but for now it's in the Navy I am bound
